In most circumstances, you can get by with an older X470 motherboard if you don't intend on adding a super-fast SSD or a high-end next-gen graphics card (which you can't actually buy at prices anywhere near to affordable currently either). However, as the number of AM4 CPUs has grown, there have been more compatibility concerns between CPU and motherboard versions. So, before you buy, double-check CPU compatibility with any board you're thinking about.
