Business Description
About the Author Dr. Borden graduated from high school at sixteen years of age and spent time traveling the country pursuing the sport of falconry. Mark was also an avid diver, and at the peak of his free-diving (breath hold diving) ability, represented the USA on the World Spearfishing Team in Mallorca, Spain. Mark's father, seeing major changes in the medical profession, advised him to "go into business, not medicine." Mark became a SCUBA instructor in San Diego, but as teaching SCUBA became less challenging, he discovered there was more money to be made as a commercial diver. Mark maintained a love of biology and continued to take a course each semester at San Diego State University. It was in Marine Invertebrate Zoology that he met the "love of his life," Erin Elizabeth Riley. Erin was working on her master's degree. When Erin was accepted into a PhD program at Washington State University, Mark sold the business and went with her to her home state of Washington. Pullman, Washington, is far from the ocean, but Erin was tolerant enough to share their apartment with a goshawk and a prairie falcon. Choosing between human and veterinary medicine was difficult for Dr. Borden. Mark's love of animals is obvious, and he has surrounded himself with them throughout his life. His love and respect for animals extends to all life. As you read his book, you will see that his experiences with animals and healing in general, lends a unique depth and realism to his practice of human medicine. Mark returned to his original plan, and in 1993 graduated from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. Mark finished his residency training in emergency medicine at University of California Davis. During his nearly twenty years in the practice of emergency medicine, he has received numerous awards for teaching and clinical excellence. His emergency medical practice has been divided evenly between clinical professorship and private medicine. He continues to lecture to physicians on the subjects of Emergency Regional Anesthesia and Emergency Pain Management. Dr. Borden has always advocated for patient rights and integrity of medical practice. Dr. Borden resides on his farm in Coupeville, Washington, with his wife Erin-now of twenty-five years-his three children, and more animals than can easily be counted!
